Undercover officers including some Chicago Police Department officers and the DEA have discovered a drug trafficking operation. The operation included the distribution of about 12.6 kilograms of heroin and an additional 23 kilograms of heroin laced with fentanyl and fentanyl analog. Additionally, according to WGN9, “most of the alleged drug trafficking occurred in Humboldt Park”(WGN9). This news came after a multi-year investigation.
Furthermore, agents targeted drug trafficking in 1000 Block of North Monticello Avenue. Officers stated that this is where nearly 80 undercover purchases were made. Consequently, nearly all of the 18 defendants were arrested and are now making their initial appearances in the U.S. District Court in Chicago.
Though, this news comes amid spikes in crime and threats to deploy federal agents. In addition, four other people were charged in state court and will be prosecuted accordingly. The individuals in question ages range from 45 to 20. The arrests took place after years of investigation, this operation was deemed, “Operation Monticello’s Avenue.
Thus, this can only add to the spike in the crime rate in Chicago. Which at the moment is being used to justify the deployment of federal agents. In fact, the presence of agents here may cause residents to become disgruntled. Considering that there is a sense of heightened distrust.
