The New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services reported they have identified the batches of mosquitos that tested positive for the Jamestown Canyon virus. The first batch was found in Atkinson and a second batch was found in Hampstead. On average, 16 cases are annually reported in the United States. To prevent getting infected and to help protect the body, it is very important to get a vaccine. The mosquitoes haven’t been found anywhere else in the state and the risk is low of one transferring the infection the humans.

It is more likely for the insect to transfer other diseases to humans than the Jamestown Canyon Virus, such as malaria, zika virus, dengue, yellow fever, West Nile virus, or the chikungunya virus. People cannot transfer the virus to other humans, only mosquitos can. The Jamestown Canyon virus is not spread by coughing, sneezing, touching, or having contact with someone who is infected. The bloodsucking insect transfers the infection by feeding on other dead animals before moving on to the next feeding and spreading it to humans.

If someone does get infected the symptoms are fever, confusion, seizures, and headaches and it can also be deadly because there is not a vaccine to cure it. People do not have a high level of the virus in their blood to transfer the infection and spread the disease.

Mosquitoes are out during the day and night so the only way to prevent the infection is by using insect repellent and wearing long-sleeved shirts and pants. Tips for everyone to prevent getting infected use is to always follow the product label instructions, and reapply as directed. If anyone uses sunscreen apply it first and insect repellent second. A person can get rid of mosquito bites quickly by taking an oatmeal bath, using raw honey, aloe vera gel, or apple cider vinegar.

People should not use products containing oil or para-menthane-diol on children under three years old. Do not apply the product to a child’s hands, eyes, mouth, cuts, or irritated skin. It is very important for an adult to spray insect repellent into their hand first and then apply it to the child’s face. A few ways to keep insects from coming indoors are to make sure all the holes are repaired, always have some cool air on, and make sure to check all standing water in tubs, pools, and toilets for mosquitoes’ eggs.
