School Shooting in Maryland at Great Mills High School [Update]

It is 9:04 a.m. ET on Tuesday, March 20, 2018, and Great Mills High School, in Maryland is on lock down. There was a shooting at the school between 8:30 a.m. and 8:45 a.m.

The St. Mary’s Sheriff’s Office was on the scene when the incident occurred, and Maryland State Police also responded. According to Fox News, the incident has been contained.

The tweet that went out from SMCPS at 8:46 a.m. states: “There has been a shooting at Great Mills High School. The school is on lock down and the even is contained, the Sheriff’s office is on the scene additional information to follow. Parents/Guardians should go to Leonardtown HS for reunification with GMHS students.”

Parents were advised not to respond to the school but go to Leonardtown High School. Students were transported there for pickup.

NBC Washington reported multiple injuries. However, that has not been confirmed. The school is 60 miles from DC.

Update: According to St. Mary’s County Sheriff Tim Cameron, an armed student shot two other students.

The school resource officer engaged the shooter and put an end to the threat. The incident occurred in the hallway before the bell rang for classes to begin.

The resource officer fired at the armed student, who also fired. The shooter has been pronounced dead, however, the officer was not injured.

The two students who were shot are in the hospital. The 14-year-old male student is in stable condition, and the 16-year-old female student is in critical condition.

Cameron told CNN: “On this day we realized our worst nightmare. The notion of ‘it can’t happen here’ is no longer a notion.”

CNN reports that this is the 17th school shooting in the U.S. since Jan. 1, 2018.
