St. Agatha Catholic Church hosted a drive-thru “Sunday Turkey” giveaway for North Lawndale community members on Nov. 21, 2021.

With the help of the St. Agatha Food Pantry, the St. Jude Parish, Blessed Sacrament Youth Center, and M.M.A.D men, volunteers gave out 240 Thanksgiving meals to neighborhood families. Long-time St. Agatha member Gloria Seabrook said:

It’s always good to serve the community and that’s where we are doing today. We make sure that people that, might not have a good Thanksgiving.

A member of St. Jude, Beth Ann Toupin, told reporters the history of the turkey giveaway. “This is actually the 21st year of Turkey Sunday where we provide turkeys and other trimmings for Thanksgiving meals for about 240 families in the neighborhood.”

Despite the COVID-19 pandemic last year, the parishes served more than 180 families. It was the first year they did not give away donated food, instead, a team of shoppers used the money donated to buy everything needed for Sunday Turkey. To further protect their neighbors, one family packaged all of the meals to limit the number of those handling the food.

Toupin said that any food leftover is given to the St. Agatha Food Pantry.

She adds that they all get a list of people who could use the food and take donations to buy the food. Once they have enough from their donations, they go and buy the food, bag them up and give them to those on the list.

Anyone who has questions or comments should email Beth Ann Toupin. People can sign up to be notified about upcoming events and food giveaways by emailing Toupin at [email protected].
