Later this year, “The Walking Dead” (TWD) will end after Season 11. However, Lauren Cohan and Jeffrey Dean Morgan will be continuing on with a spinoff called “The Walking Dead: Isle of the Dead.” They will be continuing their roles as Maggie and Negan, according to the AMC announcement.

During “TWD,” Negan and Maggie did not have a decent relationship. Spoiler alert, during their first meeting Glenn, Maggie’s husband, was murdered by Negan. During more recent seasons, Negan has changed and put himself in with the survivors at Alexandria. Maggie never forgave Negan, however, they were able to team up occasionally. In the spinoff, “Isle of the Dead,” the awkward pair will go to New York City, where the original show had not been before.

According to the description given from AMC, the spinoff is going to be based on Negan and Maggie going to the post-apocalyptic town of Manhattan that was removed from the mainland a long time ago. The damaged city is full of denizens and dead who have turned New York City into their personal world of danger, terror, beauty, and anarchy.

Show Times and Release Dates

Eli Jorné, the scribe, and co-executive producer is going to be the executive producer and showrunner of the spinoff. Jorné will be guided by Scott M. Gimple, the chief content officer. Morgan and Cohan will be executive producers on the show as well.

The president of entertainment for AMC, Dan McDermott, stated that “This is a very big day for the expanding universe we are building around The Walking Dead.” He also stated that not only does the spinoff add another new captivating series to the universe, but it also is getting to expand the story around the two characters that fans have come to love or hate and grow to love in Negan and Maggie. It also allows them to explore a piece of the universe in the city of Manhattan with a classical skyline that brings on a different meaning when seen in the setting of a zombie apocalypse.

This series is set to hit on AMC+ as well as AMC in 2023. This spinoff will be number five in the “Dead” universe for the time being. The final season of the original “Dead” show, TWD, is currently being aired on AMC on Sundays (9:00 EST/PST).

Actors Thoughts and Spinoff Extras

Viewers and fans will be getting six episodes in the first season of the spinoff, “The Walking Dead: Isle of the Dead.” In a teaser image of the show, it brought back the first episode of the original show, “TWD,” showing a door with the writing “Don’t open, dead inside.”

Jeffery Morgan stated that he is delighted that the journey between Maggie and Negan is continuing. He said that it has been a ride walking in the shoes of Negan and that he is very excited to continue the New York City journey with Lauren. Morgan said in a statement. “Walkers in an urban setting has always been such a cool image, but 5th Avenue, Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty? The greatest city in the world??”

One of the other spinoffs in the “Dead” universe, “Fear the Walking Dead” is in the seventh season currently. Another smaller spinoff series, Walking Dead: World Beyond has ended its run. Another spinoff series will be getting made called, “Tales of the Walking Dead,” this is an anthology project. That series is looking to come out in 2022.
